Frederick J. Waugh (1861-1940) was a premier American painter of maritime subjects. This photograph portrays his studio in the 1920’s when he was living in Kent, Connecticut, far from the ocean; he used small drawings or photos of scenes to help as he painted.The US Navy poster and model ship represent his work in World War I designing camouflage used to confuse U-boats.
