About

Welcome to Nature’s Portraits, a photographic journey through the wonders of the natural world. I’m Tom Conway, a photographer with a passion for capturing the intricate beauty and captivating landscapes that surround us. This website is a manifestation of my deep-seated love for nature and my desire to share its magic with others.

A Journey of Discovery

My path to photography was unconventional, evolving from a career that spanned corporate and non-profit sectors. It was during this time that I discovered my affinity for photography, initially documenting personal events like birthday parties and graduations. However, my true passion lay in exploring the untouched landscapes of forests, coastal areas, parks, and gardens—places where nature reveals its raw, unfiltered beauty.

Around fifteen years ago, my fascination with nature led me to discover the art of gardening. Experimenting with perennials, roses, and shrubs in the challenging Midwest environment became a labor of love. Gardening not only taught me patience and resilience but also enhanced my photographic skills. I realized that garden design mirrors photographic composition—the careful arrangement of elements to create a harmonious and impactful whole.

Influences

Although largely self-taught, my photographic journey has been enriched by the wisdom of renowned photographers, authors, and designers. Influential figures like Leonie Bell, Freeman Patterson, and Derek Fell have shaped my perspective and contributed to my growth as an artist. Their insights into capturing the essence of nature have inspired me to refine my craft and seek out new perspectives.
